NMC goes East: meeting the challenge of Eastern Europe

The economies of Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are booming, with buying power and standards of living slowly catching up to Western levels. NMC is well represented in these markets with three production facilities and a specially tuned product range. The explicit objective is to increase presence and availability of products in order to take advantage of the market potentials in Central and Eastern Europe. There is enormous growth potential in these markets for all divisions of the NMC Group, according to Roger Aussems, General Manager Central and Eastern Europe. He believes that local knowledge of the markets is the key to optimal exploitation of the chances. Accordingly, the general managers of the NMC works in Poland and the Czech Republic are both former customers of NMC.

In Zabrze in Southern Poland, insulation products are manufactured by a team of 30 under the leadership of general manager Bogdan Kmiecik. Growth strategy in Central Europe is based on the creation of a new production facility and a local sales network. This will reflect the all-round competence of all business units. In addition to Poland, the key markets include the Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Rumania, Russia, Hungary, Serbia and Croatia. Bogdan Kmiecik sees a bright future ahead. "Investment in a new works with warehouse facilities will give us the latest production standards and the extra capacity we need to meet present and future market demands.

In Chomutov, 100 kilometers north west of Prague, the local facility produces embossed and extruded ceiling tiles. Here, the main markets catered for by Pavel Sojka and his staff of 15 are the Czech Republic, former Yugoslavia and Poland.

In the city of Sala, 80 kilometers east of Bratislava, NMC has a 500 m² warehouse from which a seven-strong team serves Slovakia and Hungary. Pavel Sojka, who co-manages operations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia with Roger Aussems, has ambitious goals. "Our local presence will enable NMC in future to provide a global service to international DIY chains.

In Shugarova, 100 kilometers south of Moscow, NMC maintains a 1,500 m² production hall where ceiling tiles and polystyrene moldings are produced seven days a week, 340 days a year. With a press for polystyrene foam rolls and two warehouses providing a total of 4,500 m² storage space, this is already a very important facility. But general manager Aleksej Leppänen and his staff of 134 are thinking even bigger. They plan to install a second extrusion line for extruded moldings – a realistic strategy considering the rapid growth rate of the Russian market.

NMC also has sales offices In Budapest and Bucharest, where Tamas Nagy and Dorin Coman serve the South-Eastern European markets. The latest location to be set up in Eastern Europe is NMC Ukraine In Kiev. Sergey Kamenski, 35, for many years a member of the Business “Unit Architecture & Design” sales team, has been running operations there since May 1st, supported by Gennady Zenchenko, Sales Manager Insulation.
